Suggested Activity - Starters
Post random community places cards in various parts of the classroom (walls, door, tables, etc.). Give an instruction to each student to go to one of the places and let them go to the actual part of the room where the card is taped. Mix in language tenses like "today you (Cindy) are going to the supermarket" for one round and "yesterday, you (Brad) went to the movie theater." After some teacher-led practice rounds, have students take a turn giving the instructions!
Suggested Activity - Movers
Deal out 3-5 random community places cards to each student. Students should put their cards out in a line and then use them to create a (hypothetical) recount (present, past or future) based on the places depicted. For example: "This morning I went to the bakery. Then I went to school. Etc." To add to the challenge, after a few rounds ask them to add actions or rationales: "Yesterday I went to the bank to get some money," or "Tomorrow I am going to go to the playground because I want to fly my kite."
Suggested Activity - Flyers
Deal out 3-5 random community places cards to each student as per the Movers suggestion above. At this level, we want the learners to create a more complex and involved story based on the cards in front of them. They can add characters or additional events to tie together movements between or actions happening in each place. Students could be asked to write out a story based on the cards and present it to the class (with other students in the audience then identifying the key locations once the story is finished) and/or create an oral story on the spot based on the random cards delivered to them.
