English Raven's Word Hoard 250
Vocabulary Development System for YLs of English
Overview:
English Raven's Word Hoard 250 is a special 'picture dictionary' system that introduces young learner students to 250 common English words taken from thematic vocabulary listings provided for the Starters level in the Cambridge Young Learners of English testing system.
Words are listed in brackets of 5, usually within a common theme to encourage convocation skills, and students are given space to illustrate the words according to their own mental depictions as well as practice writing them. Regular and progressive spelling quiz charts are also provided, as are blank templates for teachers who want to create their own listings of words.
Contents:
Each download in the system contains 5 pages each with 5 words, plus a review page for practicing spelling. The words are numbered and at the top of each page there are spaces to indicate the running word count and the teacher's signature. Pages within each download and the vocabulary featured are listed below (note that differences between British and American spelling and/or vocabulary are indicated with a slash).

How it Works:
Each Wordhoard sheet contains a space for drawing an illustration alongside writing spaces to write the word out 10 times. As the vast majority of listed words feature basic nouns, verbs and adjectives, these shouldn't be too difficult for children to draw or sketch. If the sheets are to be used (or at least prepared/previewed) in class, the teacher can assist the children in obtaining 'mental images' of the words with such devices as flashcards, whiteboard sketches and/or plenty of meaningful examples. Completing the sheets at home, students can obtain help from parents or siblings, or engage in hypothesis testing (taking a guess at what they think each word depicts/means). In any case, having the students illustrate the words themselves is helpful in building direct L2 mental image associations which may (at least to some degree) bypass a reliance on translating vocabulary directly into the L1 as part of L2 processing. It may also help to some degree in building up sight word recognition skills which can be useful as part of the learning to read process.
Five words a day is hopefully not too demanding on beginner level students, and the numbering system is designed to encourage them and show them that they are building up an ever-increasing stock of basic words in English. Once complete, any given sheet can make for a handy revision tool, especially if the students are shown how to quiz themselves and/or each other.
Two spelling test supplements are provided with each download set. The first is included in the actual download and allows all 25 words studied over the previous 5 worksheets to be tested for spelling. The other is a separate attachment, testing spelling knowledge of 30 words covered over the previous 10 worksheets. Using the former to evaluate which words were found to be easy or difficult for students as they were exposed to them, the latter can be employed in a more targeted fashion to review a considerable bank of words as well as focus on words that represented particular difficulties.

This system makes for a great self-study and/or homework resource that could supplement any beginner level syllabus for children aged 8-12. The sheets can be used as daily handouts, or put together to form a complete vocabulary building book.
